I had a patient who was on Ambien 6.5 mg. When I went to give her the medicine, l could not find it anywhere on her medication chart.
She replied, but the other nurse has been giving it to me every night. There was no order for the Ambien to be given to this woman, so I explained to the patient that I needed to take it to the pharmacy and have them check it to make sure this is what she had and that I was going to call the doctor and get the order for it.
As soon as I did all that, I would give her her Ambien. The next morning, I get called into the manager’s office, and the woman told her that I refused to give her her Ambien. I explained the whole situation to her and told her that the PREVIOUS nurse never got the order for the Ambien, and we’ve been giving it to her all this time. To my extreme surprise, the manager responded, “Well you know right now it’s all about keeping the patients happy and satisfied.”
The nurse who had given her the medication without an order never even got her hand slapped.
