I was given 3 patients in the CCU, one was an attempted suicide, which needed a sitter 1 on 1. Of course, no sitter was available. I was unable to leave my 1 on 1 patient and had to delegate my other 2 patients…since no one came to relieve me. My patient was a very large male who was having seizures and kept pulling out his NG tube.
At one point he stood up, started seizing again and fell onto me onto the bed. It took 10 minutes of me screaming for help to get even one nurse to help get the patient off me (he was 6’4 and I’m 5’2). I ended up with a huge abdominal hernia that put me off work for a year, and ended up with a recalled Kugal mesh that puts me into hospital at least twice a year for emergency care. It will most likely be what I die of…I was written up because I “refused to assist another nurse with a cardioversion in the middle of my insane assignment!” My supervisor said she she didn’t care that I couldn’t leave my patient to help that nurse.
There were other nurses with only one patient, but I was punished because I was the new one currently being bullied. To top it all off, I was not paid by worker’s comp, and I am left with a permanent disability. If I had to do it all again, I would not be a nurse. Period.
