prize fighter

ICU StoriesAllDecember 16, 2025

Back in the day I was working in the ICU recovering open heart patients. I heard a commotion coming out of a fresh heart’s room who had just been extubated. I found the patient standing on the bed holding in each hand the chest tubes that he had ripped out of his torso, black stitches with pieces of flesh attached, and blood pouring out the holes where the chest tubes were torn out. He was holding up those chest tubes over his head in each hand like a prize fighter holding a trophy while yelling and screaming complete gibberish at the top of his lungs. It was insane! It was a miracle he didn’t blow all his new grafts in that moment.
